Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger had one of the greatest Hollywood rivalries, however, after all those years of ‘loathing’ each other, the two are now in a much better place.
With two iconic movie stars battling for the action top spot, a healthy rivalry isn’t going to hurt anybody. However, these two claimed they once really did “completely loathe each other.”

Sylvester Stallone ‘now understands’ Arnold Schwarzenegger
During the height of their fame, both Hollywood icons were in the running for roles in similar films, as certified action heroes, which created a huge divide between them both.
Speaking ahead of the release of his new Netflix documentary Sly, the 77-year-old spoke to Entertainment Tonight, and said that Schwarzenegger used to be “the most competitive” — but with time, things changed.
“Now I understand the fella,” he laughed.
Decades later, the two are still on similar paths. The Terminator actor also released his own Netflix documentary, FUBAR in May this year.
While promoting the doc, the 76-year-old told Forbes that due to the competitiveness, they would have done “anything to derail each other.”
Despite being friends now, it seems like the pair don’t regret their previous feud, as it led to the success they had today.
“We both look at those years and say it was good we had that competition because I went all out to outdo him and he went all out to outdo me. So it kind of drove up our performances and our box office success and the kind of audience we’ve created,” he continued.
The two ‘disliked each other immensely’
Despite the competitiveness in the industry, it wasn’t just a “friendly feud” as the two admitted to “really hating” each other once upon a time. Stallone even admitted at one point, the two couldn’t stand to be in the same room.
Speaking on the Jonathon Ross show, he admitted: “We couldn’t stand to be in the same galaxy together for a while. We truly, truly loathed each other.”
Opening up to further Forbes on their heydey rivalry, the Rocky actor revealed: “We really disliked each other immensely. We were… this may sound a little vain, but I think we were pioneering a kind of genre at that time and it hasn’t been seen since really.
“So the competition, because it’s his nature, he is very competitive and so am I… and I just thought it actually helped, but off-screen we were still competitive and that was not a healthy thing at all, but we’ve become really good friends,” the Rocky actor concluded.
It seems like Sly will go more into detail on the famous feud in his Netflix special, which lands on the streaming giant on November 3.
